Dr Deon Kennedy was appointed as consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at New Somerset Hospital (Cape Town) in 2012. He is a lecturer in the UCT department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and was instrumental in the establishment of a referral chronic pelvic pain clinic at New Somerset Hospital. This quaternary referral clinic accepts patients with resistant chronic pelvic pain from all over the Metro West. In order to ensure efficiency and ethical use of this limited resource, a document detailing evidence based management and investigation of this complex condition at all different levels of service provision was introduced. He has been consulting in this clinic for the past 5 years and has successfully built a virtual multidisciplinary team in order to ensure the best treatment outcomes. He holds a Diploma in Mindfulness Based Intervention techniques from the University of Stellenbosch and uses these techniques where appropriate as part of a holistic and individualized treatment approach in patients with chronic pelvic pain.
He has a special interest in minimally invasive Gynaecological surgical techniques. He is chairman of the UCT department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology endoscopy committee with the sole purpose of advancing gynaecological endoscopy skills as well as training for both post graduate trainees and specialists in the department.
