Petrus Steyn is a Scientist (trained Obstetrician/Gynaecologist and Social Scientist) in the Department of Reproductive Health and Research (includes the UNDP/UNFPA/UNICEF/WHO/World Bank Special Programme – HRP) at the World Health Organization Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. He is currently a researcher in Family Planning in the Human Reproduction Team and member of the guidance group for WHO Medical Eligibility Criteria for Family Planning. Amongst other projects he led the HIV and Hormonal Contraception multi-centre RCT for WHO, currently leads a multi-country, multi-site complex designed intervention on Social Accountability in Family Planning in Tanzania and Ghana and is setting up a global project on implementation research on DMPA Sub C provision. He is also currently an Honorary Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Cape Town. His expertise includes specialist contraceptive services, emergency contraception and social sciences methodology, human rights in Sexual and Reproductive Health, medical ethics and continued medical education.
